I am very proud to have been part of the “FOKUS: Ornament” exhibition @viennadesignweek
The aim was to bring together contemporary design pieces that explore which parts ornaments play in design and in our lives. Building on the history and looking towards the future, the show demonstrated how design can utilise ornaments as ways of joyous, critical, functional – meaningful! – expression.

Knitting Stone /// Strickstein

The knitted stone is a footstool that warms the
feet. First, a knitting pattern was created by the local knitting club @nananko_knits in Istanbul. The pattern is reproduced by the stone carver Halil Evcan on the surface of a kandira stone. Inside the stone is a heating element that warms up the rock. The knitting stone is a combination of contrasting
crafts and different cultures in one object that invites everyone to cozy up with their feet kept nice and warm.

The project was initiated by @turkiyetasarimvakfi and can be seen until 25 september @viennadesignweek in the exhibition FOKUS: Ornament curated by @livvaisberg.

Thermonites during the excursion to the thermal bath in Bad Wildbad by the team of ornamenta

In Bad Wildbad, situated at the heart of the Schwarzwald, finding the remedy is a well-established practice. No surprise then that during our journey from the Ornamenta Transferium to Palais Thermal, a Nordschwarzwald Thermalbad, a discussion emerged around how practices around wellness and wellbeing can inform larger narratives concerned with caring for our resources and the environment at large.

Guided by Carola Sickinger we descended deeper into the Palais and learned more about the thermal spring waters and how the “Kurhäuser” of the Schwarzwald are places where we can reflect on the relationship between mind, body, and nature. At the Palais, the Ornamenta curators installed a collection of thermonties, ergonomically formed stones found in nature which are pleasing to the touch and comfortable to sit on. These particular thermonites have been re-worked by designer Pia Matthes and can be charged using electricity to dispense an enjoyable warmth in the Palais’ pump room.
